Abdias had no money and no idea what he'd find after he got off the bus in Les Cayes, a bustling seaside city in southern Haiti. But he knew he had to make the trip.
After his mother died two years ago, Abdias was taken in by an elderly neighbor in his hometown of Port-du-Prince. Instead of going to school, Abdias stayed home and cared for the elderly man. Months passed and Abdias wanted to return to school. However, the man had grown accustomed to his help and was afraid to lose the boy. In his anger, the man tore up Abdia's birth certificate - which he needed to attend school.
Dejected, Abdias feared he would never go back to school or have a chance a better life. That's when a lady who sold mangos in the street told him about Project Espwa in Les Cayes. "I know of a place that helps kids," she told him. "If you can make it to Village Espwa in Les Cayes, they will help you go to school."
Though he had never been to Les Cayes and had no money for bus fare, Abdias was determined to make it to Espwa. After explaining his situation, the bus driver gave him a free five-hour ride to Les Cayes. From there he asked around and got directions to Espwa.
Once there, he begged Fr. Marc to let him live at Espwa, and he said yes! Though he has only been there a few months, Abdias has blossomed. He will attend Espwa's secondary school in the fall. He couldn't be happier!
