Urgent Needs at Hope Village

We rely on donations from generous people like you to fund monthly operating expenses at Hope Village. In addition, many capital investments are needed to improve the living conditions of the children and make the operation run more efficiently. Your financial contributions can help us get some of these projects underway. Some of these needs include:

Immediate Need: Perimeter Fence at Hope Village Residential neighborhood

Currently, Hope Village is wide open to the surrounding areas. For the safety and security of our children, it would be prudent to build a fence around the perimeter of the children's residences. This area also includes a playground, a kitchen and dining area, showers and laundry facility, small chicken and rabbit projects and gardens. A fence to surround the children's homes will cost approximately $40,000.

Immediate Need: Walkways

Currently, we have mud and dirt pathways linking areas throughout the community. These are subject to flooding and erosion. They hinder mobility within the village and are hazardous and very messy. The construction of stone walkways will eliminate these issues, especially during the rainy seasons.

Immediate Need: Administrative Office

Because Project Hope has been evolving over the years, there have been a number of different places of operations. Currently, not all of the staff is headquartered at Hope Village, the organizations largest operation. This is because there are no offices in which the staff can work. The addition of offices at Hope Village will allow us to centralize the administrative staff. This will reduce transportation costs, facilitate better communication between staff members and promote the idea of “living and working in solidarity” with the children and other staff members already there.

Immediate Need: Quarters for Visiting Volunteers

Hope Village relies heavily on the generosity of professional volunteers who bring their skills to Haiti. Periodic visits by doctors, dentists and nurses help maintain the health of our children. Engineers and construction professionals are needed to help spec out and oversee a variety of construction and engineering projects. Professional advisors are relied upon to offer their expertise in setting up vocational training in areas of carpentry, welding, agriculture and farming. Our current option for boarding these long term volunteer visitors is inadequate at best. We need a separate residence where our volunteer guests can be comfortable and get the rest they need to be most effective in their volunteer capacity.

Immediate Need: Kitchen Expansion

It's amazing that Hope Village serves more than 3,000 meals a day from a kitchen that is approximately 20 by 15 feet. A larger kitchen would make meal time more efficient, provide better ventilation / working conditions, and improve storage. Approximate cost: $25,000.

Immediate Need: Clean Water

Hope Village is a 125 acre tract of land that 600 children call home. They are provided with housing, three meals a day, primary and secondary education and apprenticeship for vocational learning. The lack of a sustainable and reliable water system jeopardizes the health of the children and their caregivers. Since our primary drinking well is contaminated, we must rely on the delivery of treated tanks of potable water donated by MINUSTAH. In order to operate a sustainable farm where eventually over 1,000 children will reside, we need to raise money for the construction of four potable well systems. Each system will cost approximately $10,000.

Thanks to a very generous donor, this project has been funded and we have begun to acquire the equipment necessary to drill the wells. A great big THANK YOU to our generous friend!
